As a pregnant woman, I got access to the vaccine pretty early. Protecting Josh is our next priority. Owen will be getting his vaccine in the next week or two and we’re trying to figure out how to get one for Scott. (They say the best way to protect a little one is to make sure all his caretakers are flu free.)
The flu had a much bigger impact on our experience at the hospital. No visitors under 12 are allowed in the building – period. So Owen didn’t get to visit the hospital. The birth center has also implemented a STRICT policy of only 2 visitors per patient… and dad counts as a visitor! That means if you have a doula or labor support person in addition to your husband, nobody else can come in your room for the duration of your stay. Our nurses said they have had families “meeting” babies through the hospital windows and some women laboring with support people watching from outside. Even my friend Shawndi, who works at the hospital, couldn’t use her credentials so sneak in a visit!
Thankfully, we only had one grandparent in town during our hospital stay, so we didn’t have to do some sort of crazy “Josh Lottery” to see who could visit. Ethel got the privilege, but she was had to walk the halls like this:

Meeting babies from outside? That sounds like Russia!
Jaan just saw the photo on the side and said, "It's Asya!" I told him that it's not, and he replied, "But the pacifier!"
Wow! Masks and everything! Our hospital had a no kid visitors under 17 policy, not in the hospital at all, so the boys didn't get to meet baby bro until the day we came home. They are really stingy with the vaccine here, and we haven't had any clinics--not until the 11th in Colorado Springs, and then you have to qualify. I think Adam, me, Josh and Luke do, but the older boys don't. STRESSFUL! I am glad you are set, and the rest of the gang will be soon! It's one of my big worries.
Molly Kate's doctor isn't giving the shot, unless the child has a heart condition. Molly Kate got the regular flu shot in two doses. Being pregnant, Katie will get the shot, but her doctor doesn't have it yet. It is scary. We had a senior in high school, very healthy, until she got the H1N1 flu, and then it attacked her body, and she died-such a sad story. Good luck to ya'll - loved the pictures of Owne and Josh!!! Soooooo scary!!! I am so glad you are all okay and finally Owen could meet his little brother. At home was probably more comfortable for him anyway!
I am doing my best to get Calla the H1N1 vaccine before we head down to see you guys. Right now, our pediatrician's office only has it in mist form, which is only for kids 3 and older. I'll keep trying, though!! The last thing she needs is an extended high fever...
